I received a letter from soneone in Santiago Chili asking for help with
connecting his Atari ST computer with his Portfolio.
Is there a file here or could someone give me a schematic so I can send it
to him?   Here's a part of his letter:
"I  have used Flash (program) in the Atari ST and the TMXM2 in the
portfolio.  The connection cable is:

I dont know much about schematics, but to help with the above, 4 connects
with 6, and 7 with 8.  On the ST 4 connects with 5 and 6 connects w 8 & 20.
On the Port 5 connects with seven on the St.    THANKS

   I'm not very good at schematics either, but if your friend has FLASH, all
he needs is the standard serial cable used to connect his modem to his ST, and
a DB25-to-DB9 adapter sold at any Radio Shack.  (I assume Radio Shack is
available in south America. They're everywhere else in the world!)
   I recommend the TransporT program for moving files between the ST and the
Portfolio.  It really does make life simple and the cost is a mere $29.95 from
Artisan Software.

Tsk, Tsk, and For shame! You must know that hooking a computer to a modem
isn't the same as hooking two computers together. Both com[puters will be
trying to transmit on line two and receive on line three. Failure to
communicate, y'might say.

I have a cable I made with two nine pin females that only requires 3 wires and
communicates with my Toshiba fine. It should work with the ST as well. Mine is
kaput so I can't check it right now. Nor can I find my 9 to 25 pin adapter
that I use with it when talking to a 25 pin serial port. But the three pins
I'm using are 2,3, and 5. 5 is connected to 5, and 2 and 3 are reversed. That
is, 2 goes to 3 and 3 to 2. Also, within each 9 pin plug, 4 is hooked to 6 and
7 to 8. This sends 'handshake' signals back to the same computer. So the
correct design will look more like this:

note that the numbers are not in order. Easier than drawing diagonal lines
with ASCII :-). As for the 9 to 25 pin connections, I will try to look them
up. They may be in the Port's serial port booklet. Which I also can't find - I
really got to get organized one day!

(incidentally, I know you know this, Ron, but to whom it may etc... "nc means
'no connection'. Those pins aren't used)

    You're absolutely correct.  I keep forgetting about the necessary null
modem adaptor.  I have combined the null modem adaptor and DB25-to-DB9 adaptor
into a single unit for transferring files between my ST and Portfolio, and I
should be more specific when answering messages.

there is a program named FolioTalk ST that will use the PARALLEL port and the
built-in transfer software of the portfolio. It costs around 100 SFr (70 US$)
and can be ordered from
