I'm searching for a chip rendition of the song "dance monkey". .... I'd like to do a chippy version for POKEY. where to find it? Just put a "sid" to the search. Sorry guys. But the main power of SID is that a lot of capable musicians do the right stuff... What's even more disappointing: It is done in Deflemask.... A Tracker that is supporting all chips ecxept POKEY....
Grabbing some cool notations and put the best what pokey can do could be so easy....
Like it or not. It's 4 channels.... The only limits were about real tracker commands missing and some volume control for pulse density corrections... It's not a hardware fault ;)
Also: As those tunes come from "Amiga MOD"s , I have to use POKEY's features to resemble the "samples", to get a working tune ;) You might know that "samples" can play several instruments at once.
For me 1 POKEY at minimal CPU usage is still the limit. Mastering POKEY doesn't mean to have as much POKEYS as you wish. The Atari has ONE Pokey and this should be the standard for every tune. No problem for me, if some tune is doing stereo FX ... THEN. I saw the results at SV 2022, and I'm still not happy that people get better votes if they only use half of the possibilities. Really... There has been a tune taking part, but only got placed behind all those cheaters.
Back to the real thing. I really like the 4 channels, as in RMT the notes have been corrected, musically playaround still gives nice results.
You know this tune? It's 4 channels. And it uses speech samples. So I did some speech imitation and some mixing of special fx into the tune.
@mav I know the SID version. It's stiff, muffled, senseless and, sometimes I ask myself, why the detuning in SIDs is "allowed" and in POKEY tunes it isn't ? ;) 3 channels isn't enough for this type of music.
...why the detuning in SIDs is "allowed" and in POKEY tunes it isn't ?
I allow :)
3 channels isn't enough for this type of music.
What type of music is it? What do you mean when you write that a certain type of music requires 4 channels and another, for example 8?
For me number of channels does not matter. A good musician will make music on two channels (Martin Iveson in Wolfchild game), a poor musician will lack 16. Adam Gilmore created on '3 channels' and these are some of the best music on Atari :)
Really nice YM2149f cover by POKEY: The main difference we can hear is 'metallic' bass (with no low bass tones :) ) and a main voice a bit out of tune (due to low 8bit POKEY resolution vs 12bit YM) especially in a high registers. Anyway it sounds also good, would be cool to hear more YM covers. POKEY:
The POKEY Version uses vibratos where it should use tremolo. The YM uses digi drums. The patches in RMT allows now to use similar resources than in the ST. We need some YM to RMT converter ;)
@emkay This was done 'by ear' and no converters are needed :)
@XLent Bardzo lubię brzmienie YM2149f i POKEYa. To że ten drugi nie stroi czy bas brzmi metalicznie to nie wada a cecha/wyróżnik. Tak więc dawaj więcej kowerów YM na POKEYu. Wyszło to naprawdę fajnie.
What POKEY can do we don't fully know, and we may never know because life is too short :)
You get extra points for Logical :) I love this game and music.
If I had to complain about something, 'arpegio' is too loud and drowns out rest a bit, and should have a bigger VSlide (it should mute faster). I also once did a covers of complete Logical soundtrack :)
Are you aware there is no any filter in the POKEY? And the SID has it built in natively?
What you called a 'filter' is actually a 'pulse width duty', that's a different thing. It can be emulated by the CPU on the POKEY's square wave, and is built natively into the SID silicon.
Nontheless. It's a filter using tune and it keeps 4 channels. If SID filters sound better, is a matter of taste. I doubt, SID can do the nuances that POKEY is producing here.
