      Name it "contrast"

Turns out I’ve been confusing contrast with a lack of pitch perception my whole life. From now on, I’m going to say, "Adjust the contrast—your guitar is out of tune" xD

You should really stop telling "music is out of tune" just because you don't like it.

I'm still nosy, what "music" you'd make, using just real hardware .

Or at least show a tune you like played on the real thing.

At the end of the day we might talk about, why people from outside the Atari-Community like my arrangements, while tunes from inside the Atari-Community scare people away.

@emkay - We all say here that some of your music is out of tune only, because it IS out of tune. No offence, but that's objective fact. I am sure everybody appreciates your effort, but it doesn't change the main problem.

The real stuff is still unleashed...
What is it that you may call real music on a real Atari.
      There never has been examples.
Why do you guys not show some real music which is reliable , played on the real Atari ?

is it out of tune? I thought this was arrhythmic music composition, like Lutosławski or Penderecki.

@emkay - Out of tune is sometimes needed. But often this kind of expression makes people annoyed, no doubt it is not nice to listen to.

Me as a musician (so Alex is) we tell you - many of your tunes aut out of tune. Just they are.

It is not about we like or not them. It is about that being out-of-tune makes them much worse as they would be good or very good if in-tune.

Personally I cannot listen to out-of-tune music. This includes for example famous "California Dreaming" by The Mamas & The Papas. So - you are in one row with them :D Even Elvis Presley sung once or twice out-of-tune with the music. But those times were hard, because singer had to adjust the pitch depending on size of the hall or distance to the listeners. Different singing technique on concerts, different on the radio.

And - I remember people used to say that Atari music is out-of-tune in the past times. We atari 8-bit musicians have made a huge step forward to falsify that. So don't go backwards in time, please.

I'd bet that you put this "out" of tune , aswell ...

You'd lost. This is enough in-tune :D to be nice to listen to :)

      Thanks.
And now think about the following:

If you'd heared this tune under different circumstances, you'd never thought that is POKEY.

So why could anyone name that "return to the past" ?

By writing „return to the past” I meant return to „out of tuning”. I.e. high pitches with no checking they sound good, which happened even to Adam Gilmore. Basses with no bothering they sound good or not.
With sounds not too high an not too low there are no problems usually. But sometimes they are, especially when experimenting.

The perfect example is music for a2600, where there is a real problem with tuning because of 5 bits of divider. So you can do tricks or skip certain notes (not use them). However, I know many tunes authors did not bother, because „we know things, don’t we” approach.

I had that problem too (did not realized that those times), that when programming vibrato, I always added 1 and 0 to the base pitch, which of course lead to lower pitches than expected. Now I would do something like pwm but in frequencies domain.

In-tuning is a very important thing in Music (critical in computer music), with a few examples when it is not (a guitar music played by Władimir Wysotskij, famous Russian protest-song singer)

Maybe you guys can point emkay to some tutorials about music theory so he can understand what "out of tune" means? Something like ->link<- ?

      @jhusak

Do you get the "PWM vibratos"?

I'm asking, because I don't really understand what you mean ...

"Now I would do something like pwm but in frequencies domain."

You play two frequencies- one too low and second too high, alternating, resulting in more accurate overall frequency. Like in this new tracker for atari 2600.

      @jhusak

I did some edit , how your method might sound ....
Instead of PWM vibratos, frequency vibratos ....

In fact: There is NO time to play sounds inbetween the 50Hz programming, and there is not even the needed resolution ...
PWM runs "inbetween" the 50 Hz, as POKEY changes registers... Same with the frequencies and resulting waves... as Pokey always finishes a started wave....

@jhusak I love how you guys always deny discussions about relevant stuff..
How fast, would it be needed, to run this "one pitch higher , one pitch lower on the 2600 ?
As you might recognize... 50Hz is enough, using POKEY...
Limits were still given within the available software....

The main point of the lacking development of the real stuff is simply explained.
As you use 2 POKEYs and/or high CPU usage, you don't even get what the difference is.

Dropping software development, by just using "better" Hardware....
"Ilmenit" posted this "musical rules" thingy.... Actually, I don't need that. But PEople who design "music-tools" should have a closer look at it.
