A modder who spent seven years building a version of Super Mario Bros. that could run on a Commodore 64 faced a sad but predictable reaction from Nintendo this week: Not on our watch. The company has already filed takedown notices against the modder, ZeroPaige, though his creation can be found online if you know where to look.

Mamy jeszcze w domu Xboxa One. Kupiony dla syna i dla Kinecta. Niestety MS olał to akcesorium i w sumie Xbox obecnie głównie zbiera kurz.

Also, I'm not sure why such games were put on and on to Atari 8 Bit related forums.

The game had been done on the C64 before, named "Great Giana Sister" . Hopefully not to get recognized by Nintendo back then.

The original "Giana Sisters" was a ripoff, of Super Mario World. They wanted to do it for the C64, getting permission by Nintendo , but Nintendo denied.
So they changed the Graphics and some leveldesign, but still Nintendo was in their Back ;)

To the technical specs: The game didn't need much change for the C64. Some redraw, the Sprites could be adopted from the Nintendo Game. The Music didn't need much change, as the Chip is almost the same, only the noise channel is missing on the SID. Then, Today a lot of tools exist for the C64, to create such Scrolling with Sprite Games.

If you're not related to game Programming, this might look like a miracle, why seeing such games appear on the C64.
    But it is no miracle.

The most important point there is that people who have an idea to create a game, get all those tools presented. Just learning a little coding, they can do their projects in a not so big timespan.

    @emkay I don't see many similarities

    Nintendo Entertainment System/Famicom

The NES sound chip is called 2A03 (NTSC 60Hz) or 2A07 (PAL 50Hz) and it has five mono-channels. Two of them feature pulse wave channels with a variable duty cycle of 12.5, 25, 50 and 75%. The volume for these channels can be set to 16 different levels. Hardware pitch bending is possible and the frequencies used range from 54Hz to 28 kHz.

There is a fixed volume (on or off) triangle wave channel with pitch bending. Frequencies on that channel range 27 Hz to 56 kHz.

There is also a white noise channel with 16 volume levels and 16 pre-set noise frequencies. The frequencies that can be produced ranges from 29.3Hz to 447 KHz, and aside from the pre-sets, frequency sweep is also possible. Additionally there is a differential pulse-code modulation-channel capable of playing any sound.

If you want to play samples that sound like those on the NES though, get a program that can convert your wave-files to 1-bit, as this is most true to what imported samples actually sound like on an NES.

    Commodore 64

The SID-chip of the Commodore 64 is perhaps what first comes to mind for many people when we talk about "chip music", and rightfully so, as it was thanks to the polyphony of the SID-chip that it was possible to make advanced music on a computer for the first time, and the demoscene was started.

The SID-chip has three channels which supports pulse (with full control over the duty cycle), sawtooth, triangle and noise waveforms, with frequencies ranging from 16-4000Hz. Each channel also has a ring modulator which makes it possible to essentially mix different waveforms, which creates the characteristic "SID-sound", as well as an attack/decay/sustain/release volume control. There's also a multi-mode filter with low-pass, high-pass and band-pass. It is possible to combine the different filter effects to create additional effects.

You should check who made the chips. And different architectures could be done to get the same result/usability.
    Clue : Ensoniq

It is no big deal to adapt the tunes from one chip to the other.

    I don't agree with that:

    emkay:

The Music didn't need much change, as the Chip is ALMOST the same, ONLY the noise channel is missing on the SID.

    C64: August 1982
    NES: July 15, 1983

Then SID must be older hardware but for me is superior.

    Sound
    =====

C64 - The world famous SID chip. Three voices. Excellent range and even capible of limited digitized playback. There are a million games for the C64 that sucked but had AWESOME music because of the SID. My only complaint is I wished it had more than three voices because a lot of games had to choose between great music or sound effects. Not many had both.

NES - 4 Channel Mono - 2 Square Waves, 1 Triangle Wave, 1 White Noise. I got this from the old-computers.com. Now, I *THINK* that means that the NES could only have 2 square waves going, 1 triangle and a noise. The C64 could use any of its three voices for anything (wave, noise, etc).

Winner: C64 Why? No suprise here. Ask the most die-hard NES fan and I bet he would still say the C64 sounds better. I'm no engineer, but think back to the best C64 music you have ever heard and the best NES music you have ever heard...which sounds better? You got that right.

Let's compare music and sounds: Overlord [NES] vs Supremacy [C64]

Depends on what you like there.
The Nintendo Chip is clearly better, brighter sounding. But, they missed to add a capacitor to cut the high frequency off the bass sound.

Also, SID sounds a little off tune. Not sure whether it is intentional or a limitation of the modulations feature.
Many people preferred the muffled sound of SID, as it was a relief back then , when all soundchips before sounded scratchy ...

    Ofcourse it is.

You should keep in mind what your preferred Tune was intended to sound like on the SID, and what they got.

    Just some imagination:

To be honest. Back then I was also impressed by the SID sound , because it didn't sound like an E-Guitar, just like a nice Synth.

@emkay great cover & nice vid, thx :) I didn't seen this before.
  1.
    technical specs approx. like this:

    Pokey:
4 sound channels, normally all with 8 Bit res.
    3 sound channels, 1x 16 Bit res., 2x 8 Bit res.; (2 channels combined for 16Bit res.)
2 sound channels, 2x 16 Bit res. (another 2 channels combined for 16 Bit res.)
samples are played with 4 Bit
(with tricks used in the 80s and 90s, 5Bit and 6Bit samples can be achieved)
(with a new trick in 2018 approx. 8Bit samples can be achieved, named PDM, think this is NOT true 8Bit however...)

    SID:
3 sound channels, all with res. 16Bit (beats the Pokey!, no need to combine sound channels for 16Bit)
with a trick, samples can be played with 8Bit (true 8Bit, again beats the Pokey!)

    AMY:
8 sound channels, all with 16 Bit res. (beats SID and Pokey!)
full 16Bit digital output / sample width, independant voice mode, adjustable sample rate (up to 16Bit)
    - requires a D/A converter (up to 16 Bit) and a control processor (Intel 8051)

Actually, IF Atari did some slight changes on POKEY, just like 16 bit on every channel and 8 Bit Volume, it would have kicked all Soundchips to the middle 90s.

    Link z pkt. 1 przeczytam.

EDIT: no proszę Atari też się miota?
